Saskatoon Christmas Lights 2012

Saskatoon Christmas Lights 2012

Saskatoon Christmas Lights 2012

These Saskatoon holiday season lights were filmed in December 2012 while I was driving around the city. Just wanted to show some highlights of my daily drives. There are a ton more lights around the city so why don’t you take a drive with your family and look for some. Try to find these ones too! The Christmas and holiday spirit is still strong in Saskatoon with our cold weather and tons of snow. Thank you to the family who let me take some video of the lights and wreath on their van. You are awesome!!

Holiday Park – Saskatoon Parks

Holiday Park in Saskatoon is located at 1205 Schuyler Street at the corner of Avenue K South and Schuyler. It is located in the Holiday Park area of Saskatoon on the West side. Holiday Park has a ball diamond, a basketball court, a playground, walking paths, benches, a BBQ spot, a picnic site and lighting. It is a great park to explore around too. We walked to the side closer to the river and the park extends right down to the river. Lots of old and tall trees to look at and walk around. The Holiday Park area was once home to The Tuberculosis Sanatorium that housed the sick and dying during the Saskatoon Tuberculosis epidemic. It has since been demolished but there is a nice placard describing the history of the Sanatorium that you must read. What remains is the old house that was part of it and is now a heritage site.

Holiday Park is a great place to take the family for an afternoon.

Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at Potash Corp Plaza

This video is about our trip  to the Cameco Meewasin Skatink Rink at Potash Corp Plaza on Spadina in Saskatoon and it was awesome. The rink is at the river edge site in Kiwanis Memorial Park right next to the Delta Bessborough Hotel.

Meewasin Logo

The skating rink area offers a great view of the Saskatchewan River and parts of downtown Saskatoon. The skating rink is free and so are the skate rentals. They have a nice shack, the Cameco Meewasin Skater’s Lodge, with a wood burning fireplace, to get the skate rentals and sit and lace up. The attendant was great and friendly. He was even out there helping some of the skaters that probably have never done it before. They have chairs and skate helping devices to also help the ones who don’t have experience skating.  There is an outdoor fire pit where you can take a break and relax. There is music playing through outdoor speakers to ad to the atmosphere. There are washrooms there as well.

Pike Lake Provincial Park – Saskatchewan

Pike Lake Provincial Park Boats

Pike Lake Provincial Park Boats

We drove to Pike Lake Provincial Park just outside of Saskatoon this summer. This is a late post but I imagine a cool place to go in the fall too! Pike Lake Provincial Park in Saskatchewan is a great place to hang out for the day. It is only a 20 minute drive from Saskatoon. We went there to hang out on the beach and it was great. It is a body of water of the South Saskatchewan River that got cut off from the main river. You can swim in the lake, or if you prefer,  you go swimming in the pool. The lake was fine for swimming. No different than any other lake really. It is a small beach but enough room to get a spot. A lot of people were having picnics by the lake. You can even rent boats to go explore. There are many other things to do including hiking, fishing, walking, camping, play on the grass area, play baseball, eat at the restaurant, shoot some mini golf and more activities too. You can view an entire list of activities on the Pike Lake website at:

http://www.saskparks.net/PikeLake

It is easy to get there from Saskatoon. Just take 22nd west (highway 7) and turn left on highway 16 and drive straight for around 23 kilometres. Here is the contact information:

Sandy Beach Area Circle and Spadina Saskatoon

Sandy Beach across from Sutherland Beach in Saskatoon

Sandy Beach across from Sutherland Beach

In the summer the South Saskatchewan River levels get low and they expose some awesome beaches. A really nice one is on the north side of Circle Drive and Spadina Crescent right near the Circle Drive Bridge in Saskatoon. If you park your car along Spadina, you will be able to find a path that will lead you to the beach area. It is on the north side of the South Saskatchewan River just opposite the river part of the Sutherland Beach Off Leash Recreation Area. In September of this year, 2011, it was really hot and almost every day there was a huge crowd of people enjoying the sun and watching the river go by. The video shows how sandy the beach really is too.

President’s Choice Superdogs at the Saskatoon Ex

President's Choice Superdogs Dog

President's Choice Superdogs Dog at the Saskatoon Ex

We went to see the President’s Choice Superdogs Bite it! show at the Saskatoon Exhibition (Saskatoon Ex) and they were amazing. Absolutely amazing! To see all those different dog breeds strut their stuff and do a ton of tricks was stunning. They are more than tricks though. The dogs interact with each other and their handlers in a choreographed sequence of tricks, jumps, dances, walks, runs, chases and lots of barking. It was very entertaining and the crowd was full of a large mix of people. The show was free but I would have gladly paid for it. The video shows some of the event only. You have to go to see how entertaining it really is. All the dogs are actually just pets from the house that join the show at different intervals. Another good thing that was presented was that over 40% of the dogs came from a shelter. Good for them! The show is sponsored by President’s Choice and their brand was clearly evident at the show but they did not ram it down your throat. The show travels all across Canada so nice to have sponsorship. If you go to their website you can learn more about the show, their itinerary and its interesting history.

Stew Uzelman Pedway under Circle Drive Bridge in Saskatoon

Mural on Stew Uzelman Pedway Saskatoon

Mural on Stew Uzelman Pedway Saskatoon

We watched the Stew Uzelman Pedway under Circle Drive Bridge in Saskatoon get built and was amazed at how they were doing it. We decided to finally check it out while walking Turk, our dog. at the Sutherland Beach Off Leash Dog Park. What a really cool pedway. It is kinda loud with the traffic above and a little shaky but is pretty neat. It is so much better than crossing the Circle Drive Bridge when they had that sidewalk on the top. I am sure a lot more people use it now that is is suspended under the bridge. Plus it connects two sides of the river with amazing walking, running and cycling trails.  A neat architectural accomplishment for sure. The art work is neat and you can spend a few minutes just looking at and noticing the people and their activities within the scene. You have to check it out if you have not been there yet and it is easy to get to. You can park in the parking lot of the Sutherland Beach Off Leash Dog Park and walk or park on the other side of the river on Spadina and walk from there. Also, this video was entirely shot with my iPhone 4. Not bad.

If you are interested in other bridge viewing we posted a video showing the various Saskatoon bridges spanning the South Saskatchewan River. Click below to view.

The Saskatoon Exhibition – Prairieland Park Saskatoon

The Saskatoon Ex

The Saskatoon Ex

This video is from the The Saskatoon Exhibition in 2009. It gives a great idea of the fun you can have in any year. The Saskatoon Ex, as it is otherwise known, takes place at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon just off Lorne Avenue, at the corner of Ruth Street and Lorne Avenue. Take the Ruth Street exit off the Idylwyld Freeway.  The Saskatoon Ex in 2011 takes place from August 9 to August 14. There are a whole bunch of events taking place during the week. We mostly attended the fair rides in 2009 and ate some of the awesome food. There are concerts and all kinds of activities for the whole family. For a lot more information on the event go to The Saskatoon Ex website.
