In a small strip mall just off 8th Street in Saskatoon, is an awesome little Mexican Restaurant named La Bamba Cafe. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. La Bamba has a lot of Mexican decor to make it feel like you could even be right in Mexico. They have great menu items like:

• Nachos
• Frijoles con Totopos (very traditional)
• Quesadillas
• Enchiladas Verdes (green Enchiladas – which apparently is the most popular dish AND no one else in Saskatoon has this dish)

There is one complimentary basket of tortilla chips for every table. They have gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available as well as a kid’s menu.

Neechie Gear is a clothing store located in The Centre Mall, at the theatre end. It was started by Kendal Netmaker from the Sweetgrass First Nations. Neechie Gear has become a very popular clothing brand in Saskatoon and even further across the Province and Country.

“Founder and CEO, Kendal Netmaker, grew up on Sweetgrass First Nation, Saskatchewan. He was single-parented, came from a low-income family and had little opportunity to be involved in any extra-curricular activities as a youth. It wasn’t until in elementary that he had met a life-long friend from South Africa who literally changed his life forever. His friend noticed a talent in Kendal and wondered why he wasn’t playing on the same sports teams that he was playing on. Kendal had told his friend that he had no way of paying the registration fees and had no means travelling to and from the games/practices.

Soon after, his South African friend pulled him aside and said, “Kendal, I told my parents what you told me and they want to pay for your fee to play on my soccer team and we can even drive you to the reserve after all games/practices”. The Lemon Tree Salon & Studio in Saskatoon put together their fantastic Hair/Fashion Show Yellow Carpet Event at Beiley’s Ultralounge. Trina De Busschere says, “The Yellow Carpet Event is an annual fashion event to raise awareness and money for a charity of our choice. The Lemon Tree events team organizes the entire event. Not only are we a salon, we love putting together events in and out of the salon. This gives the artists of The Lemon Tree free creative range and a great day & night of fashion.”

This event was organized by The Lemon Tree Salon & Studio to support The United Way and homelessness in Saskatoon.

The event was put together by Trina De Busschere and Heather Jebson, the owners of The Lemon Tree Salon & Studio. They put together a collaboration involving the Saskatoon Academy of Fashion, The Lemon Tree Salon & Studio, Beiley’s Ultralounge, Derek Elvin Photography, MC College students, Chelsea Gruza, Tara Martin as the MC, and The United Way homelessness in Saskatoon project.

The Saskatoon Academy of fashion had their students make 10 pieces to add to the show. Thirteen MC college students assisted on the big day.

“The remaining clothing was a collaboration of clothes we have throughout the team. Each stylist created there full vision head to toe. Each stylist had 1 item made from fashion academy to use on the models, but the concept came from the stylist. We had huge help from Fashion Stylist Chelsea Gruza. She had accessorized and tweaked the final looks on the models. She was also back stage coordinator. She ran the live show”, added Trina.

A few local businesses donated items for giveaways during the event.

“We want our guests to feel they are at a high end fashion show and bring some excitement and the fashion world to Saskatoon.

I went to visit Blueberry at The Saskatoon SPCA this week to help her get adopted. I had heard a lot about her since she was a very special case. What I met was a very adorable and affectionate cat, despite her trauma. She is actually unbelievable. She has been through a lot and still so loving.

Blueberry is a 3 year old black domestic short hair that arrived at the shelter on January 20th, and is currently available for adoption at the Saskatoon SPCA.

Blueberry was picked up by Animal Protective Services after being found injured at a local business. She was taken to The Small Animal Clinic at the University of Saskatchewan where she was found to be dehydrated, underweight and suffering from puncture wounds on her back and side as well as severe frost bite to her ears, feet and tail.  Blueberry’s wounds were cleaned she was put on medication and given time to heal.  She has had to have almost half her tail amputated due to the frost bite but she does not appear to notice the lack of length.  Blueberry may look a little rough around the edges but has a heart of gold on the inside.  Quick to snuggle and give kisses Blueberry is very much a cat that likes to cuddle with you and will lay in her cat bed while you check your morning emails.  Her meow is very quiet and distinctive but she has a large personality and will let you know when she wants something.  If you are interested in Blueberry please contact the Saskatoon SPCA at 306-374-7387.

One of the best hidden gems in Saskatoon Pizza places is Pancho’s Pizza and Pasta on McKercher. They are obviously a favorite of area residents, evidenced by all the fan pictures on the counter and the thank you cards displayed throughout the waiting area. They have also received a lot of awards for their pizza which are plastered on the walls as proof. The staff are very friendly and Pancho can be seen making the pizza in the back area.
